Dzanc Books has announced a new book club that delivers titles exclusively as e-books. Customers get 11 books for $50, five of them available immediately and the rest avaiable once a month over the next six months. At about $4.50 a book, that's a heck of a deal. The books are also offered in multiple, DRM-free formats so readers can use them on any type of device and should future-proof the membership. I'm no expert on the economics of book publishing, but this has to be one of the most cost-effective ways to both cater to an existing fan base and build new, loyal customers. Hopefully this is a strategy that plays out well for other independent publishers who can take advantage of the cost savings of e-books.
