Weekend reads

Some weekend reading (and listening) ideas:

  • The Guardian Books Podcast this week features Orange Prize 2011 winner Téa Obreht, Granta editor John Freeman, and writers Naomi Alderman and Ann Patchett discussing feminism in literature. Obreht is notably the youngest winner of the Orange Prize.
  • The New Yorker Summer Fiction Issue features a story by Northwestern MA/MFA faculty Alexsandar Hemon (subscription required). The magazine's Book Bench Blog also features a list of books Jeffrey Eugenides will be carrying along with him on his annual hike through the Alps.

In lit news:

  • Newcity Lit, a website about Chicago’s literary culture, posted its annual “Lit 50: Who really books in Chicago,” a list of prominent figures in our local scene. Northwestern MA/MFA program co-directors S.L. Wisenberg and Reginald Gibbons are listed, in the good company of many other creative folk we know or would like to get to know. The blurbs are nice summaries of what everyone’s working on these days.
